鍋山の湯 (Nabeyama no Yu)

Address: 別府市明礬
Open: Always open
Price: Free

Nabeyama no Yu is a hidden bath in the mountains near Myōban. If you are going by car it's a 15-minute bumpy ride up the mountain. Hiking up to the bath takes about an hour from Myōban, or so I heard. (We went by car.) As I had never been there, Mr. Okamoto from the Beppu Tourist Info Office wanted to show me this special bath. There are two baths: one with clear water and the other is a mud bath.

This bath was too hot to bathe at first. Even after adding cold water, I couldn't stay in very long.

The mud bath was very nice.

In 2010 a lady was killed near this onsen. The murderer was caught, but officially the bath is still closed.

Not sure if it is still closed, but you can go in anyway. There is a gate, but you can just walk past it. Enjoy your stay.
