On this day we joined Beppu Yukemuri Kenkō Marathon/Walk Taikai. My wife did the 3.5km walk. I joined the 16km run. All the participants received an energy drink, onigiri, a towel and an onsen ticket. There were about five or six places you could choose from and we decided to go to Nageshi Onsen.
The onsen used to be called Ichiya Onsen. When the locals of this area discovered a hot spring, they built a wooden bath overnight. They named it overnight hot spring, or Ichiya Onsen. The current bath is housed in a traditional looking building, which was built in 1991.
The water is quite hot (between 42 and 45 degrees celcius), so I added some cold water. After that I could relax. I think the onsen water soothed my tired muscles.
