しいばの湯 (Shiiba no Yu)

Address: 嬉野市嬉野町岩屋川内字椎葉
Open: 9:00 till 21:00
Price: 1000 yen
Website: http://www.shiibasanso.com/

When we arrived at our ryokan the owner recommended us to go to Shiiba no Yu, but because of our addiction to stamps, we ignored her advice. The next morning, without any hope of getting new stamps, we decided to give Shiiba no Yu a chance.

Usually bathing here costs 1000 yen, but with the discount coupon we had gotten at our ryokan the price became 200 yen. We arrived around opening time and we were the first customers. It was really nice to be the first. The water is still perfectly clean and I liked having the bath to myself, especially when it's as gorgeous as this one. Unfortunately, it got busy with guests from the nearby hotel soon.

Rotenburo. My wife saw small crabs on the surrounding stones in the women's bath.

Shiiba no Yu is located next to a small stream in the mountains outside Ureshino. The best thing about this onsen was the rotenburo. It's big, the water is nice and you are surrounded by beautiful nature.

Hiroki Matsuuchi says:

I always enjoy the indoor baths, but my favorite part of bathing at an onsen is going outside in the winter and hopping in their rotenburo. There's something very satisfying about being able to take a hot bath outdoors when the air temperature is hovering just above freezing.

Yes, I agree! My best onsen experience was last winter, when we got to enjoy rotenburo in the snow. Click on my name to see what I mean ;-)
