みかゑり温泉 (Mikaeri Onsen)

Address: 別府市火売町8組2
Open: 10:00 till 22:00
Price: Adults: 300 yen; children: 200 yen

Mikaeri Onsen is an interesting place. I think it has the atmosphere of a camping. The reason I feel this way probably has to do with the fact that you can cook your own food and have dinner outside. I am talking about jigoku mushi — cook your food in the steam of onsen.

Jigoku mushi. It's a kind of oven in which your food is cooked with onsen steam.

We didn't eat here, though. We only came for onsen. For both men and women there are two separate baths: an indoor bath and a rotenburo. The indoor bath also has a steam sauna. And there are lots of family baths. For only 300 yen, Mikaeri Onsen has a lot to offer.

The tiny door leads to the steam sauna, which was hot!!

Cold water bath for cooling down after using the sauna.

Rotenburo. It's always difficult to take pictures in the dark. I put the camera on a stool and kept the lens open for 15 seconds.
