Kitahama Onsen is a big municipal onsen in downtown Beppu. It's about a 15 to 20 minute walk from Beppu station.
The terrace on the second floor offers a nice view of Mt. Takasaki.
For 500 yen you can go to the onsen and to the open air pool. In the pool men and women can bathe together. Swimwear is required. The onsen offers two indoor baths, one outdoor bath, a steam sauna and a waterfall shower.

While I went to nearby Kyōmachi Onsen, my wife went to Kitahama Onsen again and she had the opportunity to take pictures.
We started paying attention to baby-friendliness: Kitahama Onsen's changing room has a baby bed.
