Takegawara Onsen is the symbol of Beppu Hot Springs. It is located in downtown Beppu, about 10 minutes' walk from Beppu station. The onsen was first constructed in 1879. The current building dates from 1938.

Besides the normal public bath, Takegawara has a sand bath (or suna yu in Japanese). We tried taking the sand bath this time, but it was busy and there was a long waiting time. In the end we decided to just take a bath and go home. The sand bath still awaits us.

This is what the bath looks like at Takegawara.

Maiko says:

It looks like 'yuya,' the bath house in the Miyazaki film "Spirited Away." In other words, it's historic and atmospheric.

Maiko says:

Side note: In 2012, Takegawara's sand bath had 17,600 visitors, which was a decrease of 7.6% (1,400 persons) from 2011. This was due to the temporary close-down to renovate the facility. I haven't tried their sand bath yet, so I would like to someday.
